Sir Michael Morpurgo has warned publishers against rewriting classic books to suit modern sensibilities following a row over 'woke' edits to works of fictions by authors including .
The award-winning children's novelist, whose works include War Horse, Private Peaceful and Friend or Foe, argued that if publishers 'start nitpicking' language now deemed controversial they will 'never stop'.
In an interview with Times Radio today, Sir Michael said the focus should be to 'tell the same story' in a new way.
The 79-year-old's suggestions come amid a hot-button debate over rewrites that was sparked earlier this year after the books of Dahl, Agatha Christie and PG Wodehouse, as well as Ian Fleming's series, were edited to remove offensive language.

Sir Michael argued that it is 'really important' that children read books and have an understanding of the time in which they were written. The author noted that over time society has developed 'different attitudes' towards certain words or expressions that are now 'important to avoid', but also believes that children should be aware of how 'life was different, people were different' before.
He said: 'We've learnt a lot that's been very good, we've learnt a lot that's rubbish.

'I think that it's really important for children to read books and have some sense of when the books were written. You just cannot go on rewriting Dickens and rewriting Shakespeare to suit people.'
Sir Michael believes that instead of editing classic words to remove controversial words, expressions or attitudes, that authors should find ways to retell the same stories for a modern audience.
For example, he is working on a retelling of Black Beauty, which heavily references a master-servant relationship.

He argued that today's children would not understand that dynamic because 'they don't have masters and they don't have servants'.

'What you have to do is tell the same story, but tell it in a way that the children in the 21st century can read,' he said.
The author also argued that retelling older stories allows for them to be written without the 'antique' language and 'difficult sentence structure' that was used decades ago.
In recent months, publishers have in books by late authors Dahl, Christie, Wodehouse and Fleming.
